Septic tank
Indispensable for any septic system, the septic tank is the first step in the sewage treatment process. Its first use is to hold the solid and greasy materials and avoid clogging the purification system (cesspool, leaching bed, sand filtering, biological filters, sequencing batch reactor, etc.).
The solid and greasy materials settle at the bottom of the tank forming a sludge like substance. The sludge must be removed from the tank every two years for permanent residents and every 4 years for seasonal residents.
The tanks are prefabricated with cement, fibreglass, or polyethylene. Sales of metal tanks have been forbidden since the 1980's. They had a 15 year life span. Those still in use are unsecure and a danger to the environment.
